چکیده

Heat generation is a very conspicuous phenomenon in large scale bioreactors and could in principle quite easily be measured by the temperature increase of the cooling water. Taking yeast cultures growing on a mixed oxido-reductive metabolism for various reasons as an example, this paper demonstrates how heat dissipation measurements may be used in combination with one other on-line measurement in order to obtain a quantitative estimation of the nature of the on-going metabolism and of the current overall stoichiometry. The application of such measurements to controlling fed-batch cultures is also discussed.

What heat is telling us about microbial conversions in nature and technology: from chip‐ to megacalorimetry

The exploitation of microorganisms in natural or technological systems calls for monitoring tools that reflect their metabolic activity in real time and, if necessary, are flexible enough for field application. The Gibbs energy dissipation of assimilated substrates or photons often in the form of heat is a general feature of life processes and thus, in principle, available to monitor and contro...

Analysis of aluminium based alloys by calorimetry: quantitative analysis of reactions and reaction kinetics

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal calorimetry have been applied extensively to the analysis of light metals, especially Al based alloys. Isothermal calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry are used for analysis of solid state reactions, such as precipitation, homogenisation, devitrivication and recrystallisation; and solid–liquid reactions, such as incipient meltin...

Biological Applications of Isothermal Titration Calorimetry

Most of the biological phenomena are influenced by intermolecular recognition and interaction. Thus, understanding the thermodynamics of biomacromolecule ligand interaction is a very interesting area in biochemistry and biotechnology. One of the most powerful techniques to obtain precise information about the energetics of (bio) molecules binding to other biological macromolecules is isoth...

Enzyme-catalyzed and binding reaction kinetics determined by titration calorimetry.

BACKGROUND Isothermal calorimetry allows monitoring of reaction rates via direct measurement of the rate of heat produced by the reaction. Calorimetry is one of very few techniques that can be used to measure rates without taking a derivative of the primary data. Because heat is a universal indicator of chemical reactions, calorimetry can be used to measure kinetics in opaque solutions, suspens...

Titration Calorimetry Standards and the Precision of Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Data

Current Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) data in the literature have relatively high errors in the measured enthalpies of protein-ligand binding reactions. There is a need for universal validation standards for titration calorimeters. Several inorganic salt co-precipitation and buffer protonation reactions have been suggested as possible enthalpy standards. The performances of several com...
